"The moose is the largest member of the deer family and may stand 6 ft. at the shoulder and weigh over 1,500 pounds. He is also the least social member of the family, coming together with
the opposite sex only during the autumn rutting season. It is at this
time that the antlered male is the most dangerous as he will repel any
other male that he encounters using his massive palmated antlers to
push his rival away.
Moose thrive in open forests where there are clearings to furnish them
with the willow and aspen they like to browse on. They also seek out
aquatic plants in shallow lakes as part of their diet, making them more
visible to wildlife viewers.
It is just such a scene that I have depicted here. The late afternoon
sun glints off the massive antlers of a mature bull moose as he lifts
his head from the lake, water dripping from his rubbery snout. The lake
stretches out behind him bordered by the dark boreal forest that is his
habitat." - Ron Parker
